The increase in length of a solid subjected to rise in temperature can be represented by the equation:
  ΔL = αL1[T2 - T1]
where
     L1 = original length of bar
     L2 = final length of bar
     ΔL = change in length = L2 - L1
     T1 = initial temperature
     T2 = final temperature
     α = coefficient of linear expansion of the material
